In addition to these works of children's literature, the authors Stan and Jan Berenstain also wrote two parenting books for adults: What Your Parents Never Told You about Being a Mom or Dad (1995) and The Berenstain Bears and the Bear Essentials (2005). They published their autobiography, Down a Sunny Dirt Road, in 2002. Each of these books employs Bear family characters in some capacity.
In this story, everything in the Berenstain Bears' house is clean, except for Brother and Sister's room. When the time comes to clean it up, the cubs spend more time arguing over who-does-what than cleaning, while Mama is left to clean it up herself. When finally she gets quite fed up with this, she blows up at the cubs, yelling at them for their disrespect to their things and parents. This brings Papa running, where he finds the scene of unhappy cubs begging Mama not to throw away all of their toys, as she had threatened. He intervenes to explain to the cubs how it's not fair to Mama to have to clean their room, and it's not fair to them to have to live in such a messy space. They all come up with an organization system for the toys they want to keep, give some to charity, throw away others, and work together to solve their problem. In the end, the cubs are left with a good lesson, a neat room and a happy Mama Bear.
